TSC Appoints Evaleen Mitei as Acting CEO as Nancy Macharia Starts Terminal Leave

03/06/2025
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has named Evaleen Mitei as the Acting Chief Executive Officer following Dr. Nancy Macharia’s departure on terminal leave ahead of her retirement on June 30, 2025.
In an internal memo dated June 1, 2025, Dr. Macharia confirmed her exit, marking the end of her tenure at TSC, where she held various leadership roles and implemented major reforms in Kenya’s education sector.
“Effective today, June 1, 2025, I am beginning my terminal leave before my official retirement on June 30, 2025. Meanwhile, the Commission has appointed Ms. Evaleen Mitei as Acting CEO until a permanent successor is named. I ask for your full support during this transition,” she stated.
This development follows a court order from the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Mombasa, which temporarily halted the recruitment process for the new TSC CEO. The suspension came after a petition by Thomas Mosomi Oyugi, a Mombasa resident, who alleged constitutional violations and unfair hiring criteria.
Justice Kebira ruled that the recruitment process should remain paused until further notice, maintaining the status quo as of May 27, 2025.
The role requires a 10-year background in education, administration, or related fields, along with compliance with Chapter 6 of the Constitution. Applicants were to submit their forms by May 27, 2025, with mandatory clearance from KRA, HELB, EACC, DCI, and CRB.
The new CEO will serve a five-year term, renewable once under the TSC Act.
Dr. Macharia reflected on her time at TSC, acknowledging the Commission’s progress despite challenges and commending the team for their dedication.
“I am proud of the team’s professionalism and urge you to uphold TSC’s values. I trust you will support my successor in advancing the Commission’s mission,” she said.
The leadership transition occurs amid ongoing policy reforms and increased scrutiny over teacher management and education standards in Kenya.
